Essay 1: Establishing a unique claim with Aristotelian argument and Claims Analysis.

Objective: The first step to creating a unique claim is to study the building blocks of argument established by the Greek philosopher, Aristotle. In order to do so, we have analyzed our readings in the context of Aristotle’s three methods of persuasion: logos, ethos, and pathos. As you know, logos refers to logical, factual evidence, ethos pertains to evidence regarding the writer’s character or expertise, and pathos appeals to the reader’s emotions. The second step is to use a three-pronged approach to Claims Analysis to determine: (1) if an author’s argument is a claim of fact, value, and/or policy, (2) if their evidence meets the standards of being recent, relevant, reliable, and accurate, and (3) if their counterarguments are both ethical and persuasive. In creating their own unique claims, students should apply this analysis to their own thesis statements

Readings/Video: Goodman, “The Company Man” Campos, “Chief Happiness Officer: What Do They Do and Why Are They Important?” Habits of Mind Ariely, “What makes us feel good about our work” http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_ariely_what_makes_us_feel_good_about_our_work

Topic: Our writers are concerned about the current state of work in corporate America. They use a compelling combination of pathos and logos to persuade us. As we have seen, the pursuit of the American dream can take a toll on one’s career, marriage, and health, but many may still feel that the reward of financial freedom is worth the risk. Is the current system producing the strongest employees? Do employers bear responsibility when it comes to pushing employees beyond their limits? Are employers responsible for individual happiness? How do any of these options impact our society?

Writing task/Research: In a 2-4 page, thesis-driven essay, please write at least five (5) paragraphs by answering the following prompt:

According to our authors, how much responsibility do employers bear for their employees’ health and happiness?

Use “The Company Man” and at least one (1) of the other readings/video to support your claim using ethos, pathos, and logos. Find one (1) current example of a company/industry to support your claim.
