Case Study – Kumar Family

Raji and Sangeeta Kumar are both 40 years old, married with 4 children, 2 girl and  2 boys. Sangeeta’s mother Nyra, 75 years old also lives with them. The whole family moved from India to Canada 3 years ago. Hindi is their first language. Raji works full time as a chef at a large hotel. Sangeeta works full time at a daycare.

They are busy with their family and work so don’t have much time for exercise. Nyra does all the cooking. They are considering daycare for the younger child instead of the grandmother due to her health issues. Nyra takes care of the children while the parents are at work. She misses her home country, speaks little

English and has no friends. Lately she has been having issues with her heart. Shivi

(11 months old girl) has started crawling and is always putting her toys in her

mouth. She is a happy baby and enjoys playing with her siblings.

Avi (2-and-a-half-year-old boy) is very chatty and insists on dressing himself each

morning. He often wears his rubber boots on the wrong feet. His mother gets

frustrated when Avi does this. Bindu (10-year-old girl) is a very quiet child and is  struggling with reading and math in school. She is overweight and her parents  want to her to take piano lessons but she isn’t interested. She wants to take  horseback riding lessons. Ayush (15-year-old boy) is very interested in school  especially science. He prefers to spend time with his friends at the mall. His  parents want him to get a part time job on weekends but he isn’t interested and  he has been arguing more with his parents lately. His friends have been  pressuring him to smoke and he wants to get his driver’s permit because all his  friends have theirs.
