A husband and wife have entered counseling to help them deal more effectively with their daughter. The daughter is 15 and is struggling in school and becoming involved with older boys. At this point, the husband says: "It seems to me that we both need tostay on top of her school work. We need to do a better job of that—no question. But I think that at this stage the culture being spewed out by the media is raising her more than we are. I don't even know how muchcontrol we have anymore. This business about her relationships with boys, though, I think should be handled primarily by you, her mother. I'll back up whatever needs to be said but there is a part of thiswhich is best handled between two women. For this one, I'll sit on the sidelines and come when needed. I don't trust boys her age. Not in this culture. She might react negatively to what you have to say, but I think she'd be even more negative with me."
