We learned about data attribute types, tidy data tables, visual encodings and their effectiveness rankings. For this assignment, you will analyze and critique two visualizations by applying these concepts. This assignment is to be completed individually.

Inspect the following two visualizations(see the attached images). The first one is about the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in five counties in GA. The second one is about the impacts of climate change around the world.

For each visualization, answer the following questions.

Analyze all the visual encodings used in the visualization

1.            visual component (mark or group), data field, visual channel, scale

2.            additional encoding considerations (if any): e.g., data transformation

2.            Based on the data fields used in the encodings, create a table representing the underlying dataset in the tidy data table format. You don’t have to populate the table with all the data cases with accurate values, you only need to show the data field names, types and some sample values.

3.            Discuss how well the visualization follows the effectiveness ranking guidelines for visual encodings in the textbook. If it uses effective visual channels, describe how each visual encoding confirms the ranking. If it is inconsistent with or violates the ranking, describe what exactly is inconsistent/violated.

4.            Write a critique on whether you consider this visualization an effective or a bad design. You need to explain clearly why you think it is an effective or bad design.
