SECTION A

After reading chapter 3, Being a Critic of the Arts, discuss:

1) How do you describe the different focus of each of the three kinds of criticism: Descriptive (page 44) , Interpretive (48), and Evaluative (51) 

2) Discuss the distinctions between the three important fundamental standards presupposed by evaluative criticism? (page 52)

3) What do you think is meant by the following statements in the chapter summary? (page 56)

"With the arts, unlike many other areas of human concern, the questions are often more important than the answers. The questions, when properly applied, lead us to a new awareness, a more exalted consciousness of what works of art have to offer."

SECTION B

1.) 99% of all felonies end in a plea bargain. Basically, the suspect pleads guilty (or agrees to end his or her defense) in exchange for receiving a lesser sentence. Do you agree with this practice?

2.) Did you attend a public school that had Bible readings, prayers, religious assemblies, or other religious acts? Did you ever have a coach who prayed before games or suggested you join the Fellowship of Christian Athletes? Did your high school commencement include a prayer?  If any of these occurred at your school, does it concern you that these events may have violated a Supreme Court ruling? Is it ever acceptable to violate a law?
