Microbes have a huge impact on human health and disease. As we’ve discussed in this class, microbes

can have both positive and negative effects on health. You will be writing a paper on a specific

contagious human disease that is caused by a microbe. You have three overall tasks: 1) Describe the

disease (what are the symptoms? How are the body’s systems impacted? What is the prevalence? What

is the outlook? etc...). 2) Describe the microbe responsible for causing this desease (What is it? What are

it’s characteristics? Any special features? Etc... 3) What are the current treatment strategies for

controlling this disease (How does it kill/control the microbe? How effective is it? Is it available in all

parts of the world? Etc...).

You can chose any disease you wish (so long as it is caused by a microbe and you can find sufficient

information to address the above questions). Some diseases might be so “new” that we don’t really

know that much about them... While these may be interesting, it will be somewhat difficult to answer

the above question
