The Jones family is examined as an organized whole and family members are interdependent and interactive. What happens to the Jones family as a whole affects each individual family member and what happens to the individuals in the Jones family affects the totality of this family unit. The Jones family system has characteristics designed to maintain stability or homeostasis, though these features may be adaptive or maladaptive. At the same time, the family changes constantly in response to stresses and strains from the external environment, as well as from the internal family environment. The Jones family members are a system where they are all interconnected. The Jones family as a whole is considered greater than the sum of its parts. They are dynamically creating and dissolving boundaries between the family and the broader environment, as they sustain the health of the family as a whole system. ? ? The Jones family, like all families, shares basically the same processes of all family that develop and change over time. Family development is often described as adult parents with children at various developmental stages, aging together through various life goals, to the death of the parents. How the Jones family experiences these important transitions is key to understanding the nursing focus with the family. Each family member in the Jones family is considered from a developmental point of view and the family as a whole is considered relative to how successful (as determined by them) they are with achieving their collective and individual goals as a family. This theory brings together the effect of an individual and the family, which, in turn, influences the surrounding community, and the larger ecological and social environment. It brings together the effect of both genetics and the environment from the individual and the family to the greater economic/political structure over time. Family Assessment and Intervention Model The Jones family is living with, adjusting to, and stressed and influenced by Linda’s chronic illness of multiple sclerosis (MS). The family is in a constant state of stress as it adjusts to the new patterns, regimens, and roles the chronic illness has imposed. Review Figure 3-7, Kaakinen, et al (2014). The nurse would inquire about the nature of Linda’s chronic illness and how the family is adapting/functioning (Kaakinen, et al. 2014). The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a multidimensional framework consisting of three key groupings: structural, dimensional, and functional. Each category has its own subcategories, and clarifies family strengths, limitations, roles and all possible resources the family has or may need. These findings assist the nurse to assess the Jones family’s perspectives at this specific time in their lives and enable the nurse to help with any difficulties or challenges the family may encounter. The CFIM is a classifying framework conceptualizing the interconnection between a particular domain (i.e., cognitive, affective, or behavioral) of family functioning and a particular intervention offered the nurse. Example 1: The research journal article I have selected is based on a study conducted to examine how families having a child with Down’s syndrome adapt to their child’s diagnosis. Down’s syndrome is a debilitating condition and its diagnosis is deemed as a painful experience for parents and other family members. The research is guided by the resiliency model of family, stress, and their adjustment to the situation leading to adaptation. The theoretical framework of “family stress theory” is designed by McCubbin and McCubbin in 1993. The family stress theory focuses on the analysis of how families experience and cope with stressful life events (Smith & Parker, 2015, p. 31). A correlational research design is used to examine adaptation and resilience in families of children with Down syndrome. The model is useful for this research to explain why some families adapt well to the situation and why some families struggle or fail and what the influencing factors are in the process. Adaptation was studied with the linkage between family demands, family appraisal, family resources, and family problemsolving communication. The framework of the resiliency model helped the authors to prove that families with children having Down syndrome can adapt easily if a family has fewer other family stressors, or demands, a positive attitude towards life, a shared belief that they can manage ongoing challenges, have enough family resources and good problem-solving communication and coping skills (Caples et al., 2018). The study concluded that affirmative communication and family hardiness are the important factors to positively affect the adaptation process of a family. Example 2: In my research I found an article describing the correlation between family socioeconomic status and child cognitive and noncognitive development, as well as a supporting article. My main research article applies multiple theories that are easily applicable to everyday family life and function. These theories include the Investment Theory which considers the amount of time and finances parents invest in their child’s/children’s future(s), and the Family Stress Theory which asserts that if parents are financially stressed it can directly affect psychological well-being, which in turn affects parenting skills (Khanam & Nghiem, 2016). This pair of theories contributes to the research study by reinforcing evidence found by many studies completed in the past; namely that socioeconomic status can greatly impact normal child development and family units in general (Khanam & Nghiem, 2016). The authors of this article were forthcoming with the fact that financial support seems to impact cognitive development more than noncognitive but contributes to both in some ways. When considering the appropriateness of theories in nursing for families, I believe that ease of application is important. The aforementioned theories are relatable to everyday life and do not involve abstract thinking, as this would not be entirely appropriate for something as factual as finances. The Investment Theory supports positive outcomes for the family and is a direct reflection of family dynamics such as providing support and security (Khanam & Nghiem, 2016). The Family Stress Theory provides an explanation of why families behave in certain ways and possible consequences of those behaviours (Khanam & Nghiem, 2016). In my opinion, the research findings from this study and similar studies can direct nurses when to complete more in-depth assessments to ensure all children have a chance to properly develop regardless of parental financial status.
