International Literacy Day (ILD) 2021 was be celebrated under the theme "Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide".Undoubtedly the COVID-19 crisis has disrupted the learning of children, young people and adults at an unprecedented scale. It has also widened the pre-existing inequalities in access to meaningful literacy learning opportunities, disproportionately affecting 773 million non-literate young people and adults. We have seen innovations during the time of pandemic to connect and reach out to people via digital mode like Google Meet, Zoom, etc. These platforms ensure that teaching and learning can be continued though there are challenges mostly due to poor digital connectivity. The digital divide has been an issue in poor and developing nations due to the lack of devices and connectivity.This unrivalled crisis has also deepened pre-existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting nonliterate young people and adults.  It is undeniable that the rapid shift to distance learning forced by the pandemic has deepened the exclusion of many especially vulnerable communities, including children and women with disabilities. Disparities in terms of connectivity, infrastructure, and the ability to engage with technology, as well as access to other services such electricity are a contributing factor to the deepening of inequalities.Digital divide encompasses five forms of inequality:

1-Technological (technological opportunities)

2-Immaterial (life chances, freedom)

3-Material (economic, social, and cultural capital; resources)

4-Social (positions, power, participation)

5-Educational (capabilities, skills).

The increasing gap in the digital divide has significantly undermined access and delivery of education. Many in the education sector ask: How do we bridge the digital gap and how do we ensure equitable and inclusive access to technology-enabled literacy learning? Here are few ways to Improve the Digital Divide's Impact on Education.

1-Governments Need to Improve Affordability of Digital Resources

2-Propose innovative methods to bolster and scale the use of existing technologies to accelerate the distribution of connection globally

3- Digital Skills Acquisition and Empowerment for Schools, Teachers, and Students

Then the group on the less privileged side of the divide will find it harder and harder to cross to the other side.As Nelson Mandela once said, "If we cannot ensure that this global revolution creates a world-wide information society in which everyone has a stake and can play a part, then it will not have been a revolution at all."
