Sociology

Answer the following questions: Discuss the strengths and limitations of using labelling theory to understand how mental illness is viewed as deviance.

Each essay should be 1,000 words (excluding bibliography).

Essays must conform to the following rules:

  • Essays must be fully referenced. Wherever ideas, words, or tables are taken from another source, a reference must be provided. The bibliography does not count towards the word limit.
  • Essays must be typed in 12-point font (Arial or Times New Roman) and double-spaced with generous margins.
  • Essays must conform to the Harvard referencing system (no footnotes!), and students must not reference lecture notes (find the idea in the library).
  • Points will be deducted for late essays, missing references and citations.
  • Plagiarism will be treated extremely seriously.
  • Sociological texts with identified authors must be the main source for essays.
  • 5 references.

In the marking of essays, we will be looking for the following:

  • Relevance of the answer to the question
  • Ability to understand the theoretical issues and concepts
  • Ability to analyse and interpret the work of others
  • Evidence of research and preparation
  • Effective use of evidence/data/sources
  • Clarity of expression, grammar, punctuation, spelling and proof-reading
  • Capacity to sustain an organised, coherent and persuasive argument
  • Originality of argument and expression
  • Correct referencing and citation practices.
