I believe that the main reason that the Mexican-American war tends to be overlooked in history is that it was seen as the precursor or predecessor to the Civil War. The Civil War is widely known and respected in historical events so of course it out shined the thing that led to it. Other factors include the fact that Mexico never recognized Texan independence and stopped all diplomatic relations after the U.S. annexation of Texas in 1845.

I believe what lead the Mexican-American War to be forgotten was the fact that there were more bigger wars that caught more attention from people. Then too, since there were people who were opposed of the war, they maybe try to forget about that event because they were maybe disgusted or embarrassed. The way it happened maybe rubbed people the wrong way and that could lead to the not speaking of it and wanting to never think or speak of it.
