Various authors define the genre as the category of musical, literary, and artistic composition characterized by a specific form, content, or style. Genre is categorized into various categories that use different or similar genre conventions as well rhetorical situations. Various genres are used on the same subject to establish a common relationship between literature work and help in literature work to make sense of all what the information is about. This essay will identify three categories of genres used on the same subject and another genre used in different subjects and analyze the commodities that exist between the selected genres, differences that exist, and reasons why such identified differences exist.

Genre Definition

Fantasy in literature uses features such as supernatural as well as magical elements that are unrealistic. If a form of the genre in which authors use the juxtaposition of real-world settings with magic or supernatural elements to create an imaginary universe that has its logic, physical laws, and a population of imaginary creatures and races (Carmody, 2021). In the real sense, the fantasy genre in literature is not tied to other types of the genre, such as scientific and reality tales. There are various types of fantasy genres, including high or epic fantasy, low fantasy, and magical fantasy.

Besides, the fairy tale is another genre that uses magical settings to create imaginary characters such as angles, witches, dwarfs, and talking animals. Fantasy in literature is used to write short stories with unique settings and characters (Carmody, 2021). One good example of the fairy tale genre is the royalty fairy tale.

Genre Examples

Genres in fantasy tales and fairy tales use common conventions to depict the expected message. A magic system is normally used to create a system where things in the story do not exist in the real world. A well-developed and organized setting is common among epic, low, and magical fantasy and royalty genres intended to create a story in a new and unique place (Holliday & Sergeant, 2018). In addition, epic, low and magical genres share the same commonality of complex cast characters. Besides, the central theme of conflict in earlier mentioned genres in fantasy is common, and a have structure of government-organized within the established world.

However, their presentation of rhetorical situations and conventions differ in one way or the other. In the fantasy genre, there are no scientific speculations of facts. Fantasy stipulates implausible magic and supernatural elements to pass messages to the reader (VanderMeer & VanderMeer, 2020). In fairy tales, magic or the existence of supernatural powers is assumed to exist and is normally set in a world that is equivalent to the story and always has set moral values in it.

Genre Critique

Epic, low and magic genres are used to ask both philosophical and spiritual questions. They are also used to explore the creative approaches in matters of beliefs and faith, bad and good, what is wrong and right, and deeply held values in society that are intangible  (Holliday & Sergeant, 2018). The royalty genre is used to give moral ways in a manner that is for the audience to remember. Besides, they are used to teach moral lessons in addition to entertainment.

Conclusion

Genres in literature might have the same or different conventions and rhetorical situations. Each form of the genre in literature work serves a specific purpose that makes it unique from other forms of genres. Fantasy genres such as epic, magical, and low genres are used in literary work to explore beliefs, values, and morals in society. The royalty genre is used to depict moral values to the audience and for entertainment purposes.
