This paper will focus on Epic Genre such as Epic Romance the Titanic. The Titanic will help show viewers the historical events of a shipwreck, yet dramatized by a love story in the mix. The producer /director James Cameron’s inspiration for this film came from his fascinations with shipwrecks. In the movie Titanic it stars two lead actors Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson the poor artist who a high-class pampered Kate Winslet as a young Rose DeWitt falls in love with aboard the New exquisite ship the Titanic. In the beginning of the movie, it has researchers searching for a necklace known as The Heart of The Ocean, a rare diamond that is said to have went down with the Titanic. They receive a call from an older lady claiming to know the story of the Titanic because she was aboard it when it sank. The story starts as Jack won his ticket in a game of poker while Roses family who were upper class were departing with the ship. Amidst the severity of difference between social upper class which is Rose DeWitt and third-class Jack Dawson they don't let that come between them. The first encounter that Jack Dawson had with Rose was when she was tempted to commit Suicide by throwing herself over board the ship into unsettling freezing waters. The reason Rose tries to commit suicide is because she is unhappy with the situation her mother has put her in which is an engagement to solve their financial problems.
Jack shows Rose a different side as in third-class allowing a raw relationship to form between them. Roses fiancé has given her a necklace which is a sapphire heart shaped Dimond to which is known to everyone as the Heart of The Ocean. Roses fiance Calderon Hockley finds out about Roses and Jacks affair while as the ship of Titanic is sinking from hitting an iceberg. Cale is able to aboard the life preserves boats, while Rose and Jack are trying to escape the flooding ship.
Rose is wearing a coat and, in that coat, lies the Heart of The Ocean. Rose and Jack make it off the sinking ship as Jack has Rose wadding on a door while he remains in the cold freezing ocean so she can escape hypothermia. Rose is rescued and as for poor Jack he dies with the titanic sinking away into the depths of the ocean.
The Titanic brings in different elements of disaster, forbidden romance and suspense. This genre brings in two people from two different life styles. Titanic has two main characters corning from two different backgrounds despite how everyone can prese their relationship sticking it out to the very end. Although they have many obstacles to face such as the thought of society and how their lives will change once they are off the ship that still doesn't stop the love that they have for each other. The film starts out as proceeding to a happy ending between two people sought out to be together end up facing a tragic death upon water. Titanic maintains a Forbidden Romance but yet a human loss as well.
This film is relatable to today's presence to be able to connect to those viewers that have forbidden love. The lighting used in Titanic helps the viewer understand the realism of the events that occurred. Lighting sets the mood for the film making emotions more visible and events more real. High key and low-key lighting was used for this film. High key lighting is used to help improve high contrast ratios meaning to increase the amount of ambient light in a scene. This makes the scene isolated to focus on the subject. Hints the scene where Jack holds Rose at the bow of the ship. Low key lighting is when a scene is being emphasized and more dramatic.
For example, for people are sitting around a table, talking about baseball. Five minutes of it, very dull. Suddenly a bomb goes off, blows the people to smithereens. What does the audience have? Ten seconds of shock. Now take the same scene. Tell the audience there is a bomb under the table and it will go off in five minutes. Well, the emotion of the audience is very different.
Now the conversation about baseball becomes very vital because the audience is saying: "Don't be ridiculous. Stop talking about baseball, there's a bomb under there." (American Film Institute, 2003, pp. 86-87) (Goodykoontz, Jacobs, & Pritts)
Story elements that make a Epic romantic genre a genre: being saved I rescue, love and obstacles with turmoil and conflict and economic pressures and necessity as deciding factor for marriage. James Cameron not only gives you forbidden love but tragedy outside of Jack and Rose. Cameron knew that making a movie about a sinking vessel would be difficult catching the viewers' attention and with doing so created the love story of Jack and Rose. Having the historical event such as the Titanic also known as the RMS Titanic dismember and sink adds to the dramatization going on between Jack and Rose trying to escape. The film doesn't end in a guy gets the girl. This film allows new generations to relate to this film by the hate that still goes on in today’s times. Yes, we are not still in those times where color, or sex was more abolished than now in todays times, but does not mean that the differences of which others choose to see rather than to accept are not still criticized today . The scenes where Jack shows Rose his "side of the table" allows viewers to see that not everything is as bad as everyone sees.
In conclusion, genres are categorizations that help viewers decide what they would like to see. Genres entice viewers interest to invest them to want to watch the film. James Cameron captions the history of the RMS Titanic sinking through setting and lighting. The lighting contributes to the mood allowing the setting to be a romantic yet tragic event. Cameron wanted viewers to feel like they were really on the Titanic by showing such beauty in the detail of the ships anti-cultural structure. The events that have taken place such as the Titanic sinking and how it sank brings in viewers to want more information on how it sank becoming a public fascination.
