Research Topic: Chronic Pain Management can be a bit of a challenge to juggle for health care providers and staff. They juggle between giving the right kind of. quality patient care and preventing over-use or misuse of the addictive opioids.
Chronic pain management is a public health dilemma America has faced for a very long time. Healthcare providers must decide how to alleviate their patients’ discomfort with the risks and challenges of managing opioid use and misuse. Pain is something doctors are unable to see, meaning, subjective to the patient which makes things a little harder. At the same time pain causes patients a great disruption to their activities of daily living and can cause psychological issues like depression and anxiety. On the other hand, opioid use can cause those same psychological problems. We must find a medium to this dilemma. It is important for physicians to promote safe pain management and opioid prescribing and acknowledge the ever-growing opioid crisis. There are several ways to promote non-opioid care for chronic pain as well as multidisciplinary approaches.
What can we do as health care providers to reduce, or not add to the opioid crisis while still managing our patient’s chronic pain?
