This assignment will consist of your thoughts, reflections, and analyses of the reading assignments given in class. Each reading assignments will consist of excerpts from different texts. An excerpt is a part, chapter, or section of a book, journal, or magazine article.

For each excerpt in an assignment, you will write a response that demonstrates:

o Acomplete read and summary of the content

o Identification and understanding of the main ideas

© Questioning that reflects what is not clear or understood

o Analysis of the reading through making sense of its meaning or significance on your own terms

o Critical thinking towards the content —deciding what you think or feel and explaining it

o Reaching your own conclusions about the content

For each reading analysis assignment, develop and write an analysis for each excerpt in the form of a complete paragraph. For example, a reading assignment with three excerpts will be three paragraphs. Acomplete paragraph should be at least S complete sentences (not “lines”). A complete sentence is a fully- developed and clearly-expressed idea.

You can choose from the following tweive methods to develop your excerpt paragraphs.

 

u Statement analysis - with this method, you focus your response to statements made by the author.

 

Ust 2-4 statements made in the reading by the author and respond to them, explaining wivy you chose

these statements and what you think about what the author is saying.

 

1 Comparison - with this method you compare and contrast ideas from within one reading excerpt or

between readings.

 

co Critical thinkhag -— with this method, you engage the ideas of the reading by expressing agreement or

disagreement with the content, and why you agree or disagree.

 

2 tnquistiory analysts - using this method, you will ask questions seeking explanation, clarification,

further information, or that express engagement in some capacity.

 

Three-point analysts - in this method, you will identify, analyze, and summarize the theee most

significant ideas in the excerpt and exptain why they are significant.

 

Oo Femintst/gendered critique - In this method, you analyze the excerpt from a feminist or gendered

perspective, identifying and explaining how it includes or does not incude, represents of

misrepresents the specific experiences or perspectives of women and/or LGBTQ+ people

 

0 Social class analysis - with this method, you identity and explain how the content in the excerpt can

be analyzed by its relationship to social class, class conflict, class struggle of other factors that have

ienplications foc social class differences o¢ diferent perspectives influenced by social class.

 

Critical sace theory - with this method, you will examine and analyze the content from the powt of

‘tew of race and racism (perspective, representation/misrepresentation, etc], and how this impacts

and shapes how we understand the reading content and history in general.

 

1 Personal nasratbre - using this method, you will evaluate and analyze the readwg content by

comparing it to your own experience, perspective, o personal history.

 

&  Trensborder ansiysis - by using this method, you will analyze the reading and explain how it can be

understood of explained from a cross-border, of transborder, perspective. This can inchide the

ienglications for different ways the border impacts the experience of people on different sides or how

national borders shape the experiences of people who cross them.

 

1 Review - using this method, you will engage and evaluate the reading from the point of view of a

scholarly reviewer. Like a film or book review, you analyze the ideas, supporting evidence, of style of

the reading content in order to determine and conclude whether or not the reading is successful in

communicating the content in a meaningful way.
