Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) under Climate Change
IDF curves are commonly used in engineering design. Due to climate change, IDF curves based
on historical observation are not adequate for the robust infrastructure design and making
long-term decisions. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) recommends to use a
scaling methodology for accounting climate change impacts to extreme rainfall and IDF curves.

1. Download and present IDF curves for your study area. Determine historical estimated
rainfall intensity for 1-hr storm duration, and 5-year, 10-year, 50-year and 100-year
return periods for your study area.

2. Determine future estimated rainfall intensity (using the above mentioned equation)
over the period, 2041-2070 for 1-hr storm duration, and 5-year, 10-year, 50-year and
100-year return periods for your study area under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios.

3. Calculate and obtain IDF curves based on historical observed precipitation for your study
area using the IDF_CC Tool 6.0 available at (MR Present your
IDF curves as a figure and compare results with the corresponding values from Task 1.

4. Calculate and obtain the updated IDF curves (using the above mentioned tool) based on
CMIPS GCMs data for the future period, 2041-2070 for 1-hr storm duration, and 5-year,
10-year, 50-year and 100-year return periods of your study area under RCP4.5 and
RCP8.5 scenarios. Download and present the tabular results and IDF curves, box-plots as
well as compare results with the corresponding values from Task 2.
