Case 1 Age: 10 Gender: F “Amy” was identified as hearing impaired by a neonatal screening

Biology

Case 1
Age: 10 Gender: F
“Amy” was identified as hearing impaired by a neonatal screening. She currently wears behind-the-ear hearing aids. She says that her left ear hurts and reports that her hearing is “bad” in that ear. She is being tested in an audiology/ENT practice. The ENT physician’s notes say that the tympanic membrane (TM) is red, and that fluid can be seen behind the TM. Audiologic evaluation is requested in order to determine the degree and type of hearing loss. Her audiogram is shown below.
The speech testing results are summarized below. The intensity of the presentation level is shown to the right.

• What is the three-frequency PTA for the right and left ear?
• What do you think (m) means in the table above?
• Identify the type and degree of loss in each ear. Are these results consistent with what would be expected based on the patient report and the physician’s observations?
• Based on the SPRINT chart, is this patient’s WRS what would be expected for the patient’s hearing loss? Explain your answer. How would you classify their general word-recognition ability based on the ranges given in Chapter 4?
• Based on the patient’s reports, the physician’s observations, and the audiometric findings, what type of tympanogram results would you expect in each ear? Explain why you think those results would be most likely.
