Assessment 2 Presentation

Task Summary
Students are expected to utilise publicly available financial market information and determine returns and risks with regards to shares of companies that are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). They must apply the concepts of risk and return.
Students are expected to prepare 10 - 12 ppt slides and record a 15 minutes presentation addressing the assessment tasks.

Context:
A year has gone past since the World Health Organisation declared on the 31st of May 2021 that the Delta COVID-19 variant was as a major health concern due to its increased transmissibility compared to previous variants. As a result, many nations continued to exercise caution. However, with increased uptake of vaccinations, we have seen relaxations of lockdowns and rules in many nations. It would be worthwhile to examine how the stocks have behaved in the 12 months from 31 May 2021 to 31 May 2022.
This assessment aims at:
• Testing the students’ understanding of the concepts of risk and return, and their ability to calculate mean returns (arithmetic and geometric), and holding period return.
• Assessing students’ ability to determine beta and standard deviation
• Assessing students’ ability to make an investment decision based on risk and return measures
• Comparing standard deviation and any downside risk measure
Assessment Tasks:
Task 1
Your Facilitator will allocate to you a pair of companies (see document in Assessment 2 folder on Blackboard); one which is part of the ASX200, an Australian stock market index and the other belonging to the Nikkei 225, the index representing the top 225 companies by market capitalisation on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE). You should download daily (Adjusted Closing) stock prices from yahoo finance from 31 May 2021 to 31 May 2022. For each company, calculate daily stock returns; arithmetic mean of daily returns, geometric mean of daily returns, and the holding period return (HPR). (10 marks)
Please note that a company can be listed on a number of stock exchanges. On Yahoo Finance you will see that a listing on the Australian Stock Exchange is represented as Equity.AX, whereas a listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange is shown as Equity.JPX
Task 2
Calculate and identify which one of the stocks of the two companies is riskier than the other using beta and standard deviation as risk metrics. (10 marks)
Task 3
Using geometric mean return information and the standard deviation metrics calculated above, which company would you invest in if you were a risk-averse investor? Justify your choice. (7.5 marks)

Task 4
Perform a comparative analysis of how the companies’ industries have been affected by the advent of COVID-19. (7.5 marks)
Task 5
Perform a comparative discussion of standard deviation as a measure of risk with one downside measure of risk. Note that Investopedia and Wikipedia are not authentic scholarly sources for this task and should not be used. You are expected to use information from peer reviewed journal articles. (10 marks)
Instructions:
• Prepare a minimum of 10 PowerPoint slides (maximum 12 slides) to be presented in 15 minutes addressing all assessment tasks.
• Record a 15-minute video in which the presenter’s face is seen. You are recommended to use zoom and if not available, you can use any other recording platform.
• The PowerPoint slides are to be submitted via Blackboard. You should also submit the EXCEL document with your calculations.
• Remember to cite the sources of information used. Include a list of references in the last slide of your presentation. It is important to adhere to the APA 7th Edition Referencing Style.
• Students will be assessed on how well they address the assessment tasks, how well they demonstrate the knowledge of risk and return on equity investment. Ability to apply the knowledge to making a sound investment decision will also be evaluated. The quality of the presentation will be a crucial component of determining the final mark. Please refer to the learning rubric for more details.
Submission Instructions:
Submit this task via the Assessment link in the main navigation menu in the FINA6000 Managing Finance folder. The Learning Facilitator will provide feedback via the Grade Centre in the LMS portal. Feedback can be viewed in My Grades.
I declare that except where I have referenced, the work I am submitting for this assessment task is my own work. I have read and am aware of Torrens University Australia Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure viewable online at http://www.torrens.edu.au
