Management

Written Assignment 2

In this assignment, you will write an assessment of your own organizational culture (or one with which you are personally very familiar) using Schein’s three levels of culture (artifacts, espoused values, and tacit assumptions) as a guide. If you are not currently working, you may write about a past employer or another organization with which you are associated, such as a church or a volunteer organization. You will include an analysis of the communication strategies present in your culture. In addition, you will examine ethical challenges facing the leaders of this organization and analyze the ramifications of ethical (or unethical) conduct. Begin by focusing on the three-tiered model in the section titled “The Structure of Culture” in Chapter 3 of Schein’s book:

Artifacts

Visible structures and processes; observed behavior (difficult to decipher)

Espoused values

Ideals, goals, aspirations; ideologies and rationalizations

Tacit (underlying) assumptions

Taken-for-granted, unconscious beliefs, values (highly determinative of behavior, perception, feeling)

Schein goes on to use the metaphor of a lily pond, noting that:

[T]he observer will often note inconsistencies between what she observes and experiences (the artifacts) and what the espoused values claim.

In other words, the three levels may not always be in sync. The observed behavior, the quality or durability of the lilies (artifacts), may not be consistent with what the farmer/executive claims for her product (espoused values), which tells the observer that there is this deeper level that is driving the observed behavior. The discrepancy will often show up most clearly around claimed changes, the next generation of lilies. (Schein, 2019, p. 41)

After you have read Schein, Chapters 1 through 5, and considered the organization to be studied, consult the Written Assignment 2 Guidelines for length, formatting, and other assignment requirements.

Please note: This paper mainly consists of primary research and has a major limitation in that you are the only person doing the cultural analysis. Be sure to acknowledge this limitation in your narrative. In an authentic cultural assessment, multiple groups would likely be involved in rounds of professionally-led discussion. [MO 3.3, MO 3.4]
