1 Film Analysis Final Project Draft Outline Guide Film 440 |Perkins [Page 2 through 6 max pages] Introduction [Written together with your group] The Lovely Bones, based on the novel by Alice Sebold, was turned into a narrative film that is set in the early seventies and takes place in both the world of the living and the afterlife. In this film, we are introduced to the protagonist Susie Salmon, a young girl who is full of life and future hopes and dreams. Unfortunately, her lifetime is cut short when a man named Mr. Harvey, the antagonist, finds Susie to be an easy target for him to prey upon. He ultimately lures her in and decides to rape and kill her, leaving her to never be found and him never actually being caught for the crime. Upon the devistating turn of events, Susie’s family is the one who appears to take the biggest toll as Susie watches from her afterlife how the events have unfolded and affected her family. Her family struggles in coping with her disappearance and everything in their household begins to fall apart as time goes by. Although the yearning to move forward is there, when one member of the family cannot accept reality and cope with their grief, the rest of the family is strung along and suffers. It is not until them and Susie herself can accept that moving forward and accepting the reality of death can help them move forward. This way they can find justice by healing and they can each live their lives in prosperity once again. Thesis Statement [Written together with your group. Through the film elements; cinematography, mis-en-scene, and Narration, The Lovely Bones invites the audience into a state of introspection in which life and death must be equally accepted in order to move 2 forward with purpose. [Main Content] Film Element 1 (Cinematography) 2-3 points and related techniques in 2-3 paragraphs. Cinematography is the process of lighting, framing, and capturing moving images on a film stock or a digital medium, as the shot is the primary element and how we see it. COLOR/TEMPERATURE: The color choices and color temperature of the shots in the film have played a key role in communicating to the audience the shifts and changes in mood and time. For instance, for the majority of the film where we see Susie’s family struggle with coping with her loss and their grief, especially her father Jack. There is a scene (1:22:57 - 1:23:12) in which Jack is going back and forth between his memories and the present moment as he begins to realize who is responsible for the injustice. His memories of the past whilst Susie was still alive have an orange yellow tint to them much like the majority of the shots in the beginning of the film in order to signify a happier and more carefree time. This is in contrast to the shots occurring in the present where we immediately see the atmosphere becoming gloomy and dark with cool tones as opposed to the earlier warm tones. The color palette becomes cooler once the memories begin to flood back signifying that even months after Susie’s death nothing has gone back to normality, because it was stripped away in an instant from the man right in front of him. That same man responsible for the grief and destruction laid upon his family that isn’t behind bars and thus hinders his inability to move forward or have any kind of legal justice. CAMERA DISTANCE/SCALE: For the majority of the film we see mid-long shots being used as well as high angle shots in order to see the events occurring throughout the film primarily in Susie’s point of view. Where we get to see how she as the victim views the aftermath and effects her death has had on those involved in her life. It helps the audience feel like they are watching the events and lives of the living unfold before them from “the in-between” where Susie is after she dies. It also shows a sense of 3 how destructive and isolating grief is for her family after she’s gone. (EX. 34:13, 49:53, etc) MOVEMENT/LENGTH/EFFECTS: In some of the shots a small bullet camera was used to attain closer and more intimate shots.
