For the course paper you will have your choice of three options. Please choose one of the three options and be sure to include which option you have chosen in the heading or title page of your paper. Whichever option you choose, here are some basic guidelines: Your paper should be 6-8 pages in length. Your paper should be typed, with 12 point font (Cambria or Times New Roman), double spaced, with 1" margins. You may use MLA, ASA or APA style, but whichever style you choose you must be consistent and correct with it. If you do not have direct, personal knowledge of something, you must CITE your source. When citing sources, please be sure that you cite them both in text and in your works cited page. You WILL lose points if this is not done or done incorrectly. ? The number of required sources varies among the topics. Please note- citation help and scholarly source help can be found at the end of these instructions. Option #1- Congrats on your New Job! Are there any special circumstances in this city (i.e. recent racial tensions, high profile cases, experimental practices, etc.) Once you are done with your research about the city, it is time to truly become the "Chief". Start with the big issues in your city and decide if and how these issues relate to the state of crime in your city. Use scholarly journal articles (especially from but not limited to) either sociology or criminology to support your ideas. For example, if your city has a higher than average poverty rate, could that be related to I the crime rate at all? If so, how? If there is a great deal of racial tension or racism in your city, could that be an issue that affects the police department? How does your cities education distribution fit in? Find journal articles to support these links. Link as many of your cities "big issues" as possible to the state of crime or other issues that you could face as the Chief of Police. Lastly, propose ideas that could help deal with these big issues. Your class notes might help with this. I am not concerned if these ideas are expensive or would not be approved by the city council. I am simply concerned with your ability to use what we learned in class along with the literature to be able to critically think of ways that could help reduce crime and solve other problems that are faced by the police and citizens in major cities. For this option, you will need to use class materials, some newspaper articles for the city of your choice, and also at least 6 scholarly sources (preferably journal articles).
