Topic: Sexual selection. Male-Male Competition does not always end at conception. It can take the form of infanticide. By killing other Males’ cubs, male lions gain more opportunities to mate. The alfa male is not thinking for the good of his pride but the good of his genes. He kills other cubs to make sure his offspring will be born and force the female (mother) lion to stop nursing so she can get pregnant. 

 

Purpose:

This assignment is designed to promote the effective use of information technologies to find, manage and critically evaluate information. These skills are some of the hallmarks of an information literate individual, and are at the core of our scientific practice. Upon completion of this assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography using reliable sources of information in Evolutionary Biology. You will practice and develop the following:

 

Skills: 

    - Use search engines and databases to retrieve reliable sources of information in Evolutionary Biology;

    - Gather reliable sources of information in the field of Evolutionary Biology;

    - Evaluate different sources of information in the field of Evolutionary Biology.

 

Knowledge:

    - Deepen your understanding of a topic of your choice in Evolutionary Biology;

    - In-depth learning about research activity related to a topic of your choice in Evolutionary Biology;

    - Identify the boundaries of our knowledge in Evolutionary Biology.

 

Task:

Choose a topic in the field of Evolutionary Biology you are interested in; 

Identify a question, problem or concept that is relevant to your topic of choice;

List 3 keywords that capture the nature of the question, problem or concept you are interested in;

Search 2 databases (e.g., Biological Abstracts, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, JSTOR, Google Scholar) with the listed keywords (Remember to also use a combination of words. For example, keyword 1 AND keyword 2; keyword 3 OR keyword 1, etc);

Keep detailed notes of your search results in each database. For instance, keep notes on:

How many papers did each search return?

Are the different databases returning the same papers?

What happens when you use combinations of search terms?

What are the most interesting papers from each search?

What are the most relevant papers from each search?

Identify 5 papers that you believe are the most relevant to your question, problem or concept based on the results of your searches;

Complete questions below, with the information on each of your 5 papers, as well as on your search and evaluation procedure. 

 

Criteria for success:

 

Your will be graded based on three main criteria:
