During a Crisis—Early Interventions

Cognitive, psychological, and physical reactions are common after a crisis. These may include crisis reexperiencing, hyperarousal, and avoidance reactions, which may meet the requirements for symptoms described for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are times when crisis responders allow survivors' reactions to become their own, and secondary vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue may result. Helping professionals may be at risk for this to occur because of the nature of their commitment and involvement with clients.

For this Discussion, choose a natural disaster other than Hurricane Katrina, and research the demographics for the area where the disaster occurred. Think about the populations affected by the natural disaster you chose. Feel free to examine a natural disaster you have selected from previous weeks.

By Day 3

Post a brief description of the natural disaster you chose. Then provide three PTSD-related early interventions that might contribute to the stabilization of survivors in the specific natural disaster you chose. Explain how and why they might work.
