What is the mission of your local police department? A: The Columbia Police Department’s mission is “Community Safety Through Focused Enforcement” 2. What goals does your local police department have? How do they work to accomplish these goals? A: Some of the goals that the Columbia Police Department have are: - Crime prevention - Crime reduction - Community safety - Positive community interaction - The Columbia Police Department accomplish these goals by, following the mission of the department and having positive interactions with the public such as hosting community events, as well as, attending non-sponsored City of Columbia events. 3. What are the various roles police play in your community? What is their impact? A: There are many roles that officers with the Columbia Police Department play on a regular basis which include: Role models, protectors, servants, and a listening ear. This impacts the community in a very positive way by providing the citizens of Columbia safety while also being a positive light in some of these citizens’ darkest days. 4. How do your local police partner with citizens and other entities? A: The Columbia Police Department partners every year with other community safety partners such as, EMS, Columbia Fire and Rescue, Vanderbilt Life flight, the Maury County Sheriff’s Office, and others to host a community appreciation event at River Walk Park. In addition, the Columbia Police Department partners with the Bridal and Saddle Club every year along with other agencies to host and conduct a safe and fun “Mule Day”. 5. What community programs (e. g., D.A.R.E., Police Explorers) are offered by your local police department? Explain the programs, including the benefits they provide to society and the role the police play in these programs. A: The Columbia Police Department offers community programs such as a Police Explorer Program and a C.O.P.S program. - The Columbia Police Department’s Explorer Program offers youth from 14 to 20 years of age to learn the roles of a police officer on a daily basis by also offering a positive environment to be in while in their teens. These teens get to ride along with officers after completing certain prerequisites, as well as train and learn officer tactics to compete in a yearly explorer competition in South Carolina. - The Columbia Police Departments C.O.P.S program which stands for Community Orientated Police Service provides several different services some include: Meetings with Neighborhood watch groups, speaking at job fair events, and attending school within the City of Columbia to speak to the youth about the police department. 6.
