BNS 101 M3A1: The National Security Council

In this module you are required to write a 2-3 page (not including the cover and reference pages) position paper thoroughly discussing the material presented during the week. APA citations are expected, an abstract is not.

The readings and learning activities in this module address the power of the presidency and limitations to that power as well as introduces you to the national security mechanism and the National Security Council. For this, and all position paper assignments, it is crucial to base your opinions and arguments on research.

Please visit the Excelsior College Online Writing Lab (OWL) (Links to an external site.) website for more information on writing your paper.

You are a senior staffer on the National Security Council (NSC). You are placed in charge of the new hires. Drawing on a current event of your choice, explain to them how the NSC works following the prompts below (Please refer to the NSC Website (Links to an external site.) for additional details):

  1. In brief, what does the NSC do? (ie., describe its most important functions and responsibilities).
  2. What is the role of the NSC in specific policymaking instances (ie., using your current event, illustrate the NSC's role in policymaking).

Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer. For those assignments that are not written essays and require uploading images or PowerPoint slides, please follow uploading guidelines provided by your instructor.

Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to submit your work, click “Upload Submission.”  Enter the submission title and then click on “Select a file to upload.” Browse your computer, and select your file. Click “Open” and verify the correct file name has appeared next to Submission File. Click on “Continue.”  Confirm submission is correct and then click on “Accept Submission & Save."
