Part I: In Module 2 you had a chance to create a timeline that depicted our perceptions of trauma over time

Psychology

Part I: In Module 2 you had a chance to create a timeline that depicted our perceptions of trauma over time. Here is your chance to share this with your peers. Please post your timeline image to the discussion board. Underneath your image please include a 1-2 paragraph summary of the timeline, the events you chose, why you chose them, and how they helped you understand the history of trauma.

Additionally, discuss what you have learned from the experience and provide feedback to at least two of the other timelines. Make sure your comments are constructive and collaborative.

Part II: Read and reflect on the following story: Shauna's Story. (Links to an external site.)

Now let's apply the module notes and readings to the following questions:

  1. Discuss how trauma can be passed from one generation to the next and the long-term effects on future generations.
  2. Identify a theoretical framework and treatment option you would like to use to assist Gloria in addressing her stress. Now describe why you chose these specific elements. Justify your choice and provide materials from this week's readings to support your selection.
  3. Describe interventions you would implement with this family to assist them in dealing with this family trauma.
  4. Identify and share one new piece of information you learned this week.

Shauna' Story

Introduction

You are working in the health care field and are assigned to follow up with Shauna, a woman who recently sustained serious injuries. Shauna was badly injured when metal shelving filled with vases and tools collapsed onto her at the florist shop that she owns. Her 12-year old son, Trevor, and her mother, Gloria, found her in the store when they came at closing time. According to Shauna’s records, Trevor saw his mother first and called 911, as his grandmother fainted. You meet with Shauna to see how she is doing and to assess for PTSD and any needed services.

Assessment

Shauna is in fairly good spirits and expresses gratitude for having lived through the accident. Gloria and Trevor are also present at the meeting. Trevor is engrossed on his cell phone and makes only minimal eye contact when spoken to. Gloria appears quite distraught, talking a great deal about the trauma of seeing her daughter lying on the floor and believing her dead initially. Gloria shares that she is having nightmares and fears for Shauna if she reopens the florist shop. Gloria further shares that she has been fearful to let Trevor out of her sight for fear that he will somehow be injured.  Shauna is trying to comfort her mother, but it is clear that she is feeling the stress of Gloria’s strong emotional response.

Further Inquiry

Upon seeing the effects of this event the entire family, you decide to complete a family assessment as well as follow up later with individual appointments. As you begin to ask the family questions about the event, Gloria breaks down in tears and states that hearing the noise from the falling shelves and shattering of glass triggered memories of a previous experience for her. In May of 2011, she was visiting her sister in Joplin, Missouri when an F4 tornado whipped through the city killing 158 people. She never mentioned this to her children and thought she had ‘handled it." Upon further inquiry, you learn that Gloria’s mother also survived a catastrophic event; the 1953 earthquake in Greece. Like Gloria, she never expressed any feelings about this to her family.
