Each week, you will be asked to respond to the prompt or prompts in the discussion forum

English Sep 02, 2020

Each week, you will be asked to respond to the prompt or prompts in the discussion forum. Your initial post should be 75-150 words in length, and is due on Sunday. By Tuesday, you should respond to two additional posts from your peers.

Maintaining a consistent point of view in your writing helps a reader better follow the written presentation. In doing so, the correct corresponding pronouns are to be used.

  • I think my experience as a writer has been interesting. (1st person point of view; I, my)
  • Each time you write your confidence improves. (2nd person point of view; you, you)
  • English 100 students should be proud of themselves in Week 6 of their course! (3rd person point of view; themselves, their)

Review page the graph on page 203 in the Pocket Keys for Writers text to help with your initial post. For your week 6 discussion, please watch the TED Talk in the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2tOp7OxyQ8 We need to talk about an injustice, Bryan Stevenson

First, respond to the talk in three ways using the proper pronouns, with a few sentences for each point-of-view:

  • First Person (Reflect personally on Bryan’s thoughts)
  • Second Person (Write a reply as though someone has inquired how they can make a difference on any of Bryan’s topics)
  • Third Person (Write as a newspaper reporter about Bryan’s talk)

Second, explain what point of view is most challenging or easiest for you to write.

Expert Solution

First Person:  I personally felt deeply for the topics Bryan was discussing.  There is a major problem with injustice in our society and I am all for changing it.  Bryan said that the opposite of poverty is justice, not wealth.  I believe that injustice creates poverty.

Second Person: Bryan explains that in order to change society's views on criminals and minorities, you have to open up your mind and heart to all the suffering, struggling, and bad things going on that dont immediately affect you.  It's easy to ignore something that is not your problem.  Once you open yourself up to the negative things, you will want to help.  Use your voice and help spread information to help the lower class and condemned people.

Third Person:  Bryan talks about all the injustices going on in the world.  He explains that terrorism has been going on since prior to WW11.  He is referring to the lynching and segregation that has been done to the black people for decades.  Bryan also explains the injustices in our court system.  He represents kids as young as 13 years old who are serving life sentences because some judge decided they could be tried as adults.

I think that writing in third person was the hardest for me.  It was difficult to not express my personal opinions.  Writing in first person is the easiest for me because it's easy for me to express my own opinion or views on things.  It's easy to show how something affects you personally. I do think that second person was the easiest to read.  It made me feel like the writer is talking directly to me.
