Special Reflection: Cultural Exchanges

The documentary goes through a brief but accurate explanation of how China has gone through several periods, from the Country being completely United with all of their kingdoms together to it being separated and in constant war between War Lords, there is something that has been repeated over time, and it is how it goes from a great trading and commercial boom to a time of revolution and poverty. Between the topics of most interest is the Tang Dynasty, this being the start of a China being opened to the world, where multiple cultures started emerging or coming their way up to China and building a community full with variety of foods, products, people and even religions. During the Tang Dynasty, the Silk Road was one of the most famous geographical places, that united all of these cultures and religions.

It also widely explains in detail the story and adventures of Xuangzang, when he started a journey across Asia to Europe and what he called The west, with the only purpose of bringing back the Buddha which he had in one of his dreams or visions. (Wood, 2019)

How did the environment of the region foster or discourage exchanges among adjacent regions during this period?

Taizong, one of China’s greatest ruler and emperors knew Xuangzang and had something in common with him, he also had an insatiable appetite for learning, he was a very virtuous man, that wanted to learn everything he could and he thought that ruling was inseparable from the patronage of culture and that was why he never left Xuangzang alone and why he was so open to let other cultures and regions come to China and enrich the country. Taizong fostered the exchanges in order to let wisdom grow and he could learn more and more from the Indian and adjacent cultures.
