Think about the importance of cultural issues to clinical and counseling psychology that you read in the text. Have you ever had a course or formal training on the topic of cultural diversity? If so, what topics did your course or training include? Were there any elements that were not covered that you think should be included in such a course? If you were designing a formal course on cultural diversity, what elements would you include?  Be sure to include texts, readings, and experiential activities and explain why you are including these (e.g. how addressing a particular topic will help a counselor?)

Expert Solution

According to our text book, the important of cultural issues as it pertains to both clinical and counseling psychology is the barrier between the patient and the provider. For example, the ways a client is able to understand the very problem they are trying to get help for. Coma- Diaz (2011) encourages that a therapist should assess their clients understanding of what their problem is by asking them specific questions such as. What do you call your problem? What do you think your problem does to you?

Although I have never had a formal training on the topic cultural diversity. I believe that the training should be diverse so that most people can grasp the context. If I could design a power point course on cultural diversity. I would include different examples such as how cultural norms are alike. That way the class can somewhat relate to one another. I would include what is racial identity and the different forms of racism. The reason for this is to make sure that the people that I am presenting to are aware that these types of racism is out there and to be aware of what they say and do could offend someone. The most important, how to apply concepts of cultural diversity to their daily interactions. I believe that these topics will help a counselor bridge the gap between themselves and the client when it comes to different cultures and diversity.
