Given what we have been through during the pandemic and many providers forced to go "online", what are some potential ethical dilemmas of online psychotherapy and assessment provision? What benefits might online psychological treatments possess?
I think it’s a great idea to grant clinical psychologist the ability to write prescriptions for their patients. Psychologist most likely have built up a bond and trust with their client, then diagnose them with a mental illness allowing them to prescribe on the spot. Many Psychologist also take a great amount of time learn about medications and the results of them, without being able to use this information with and for their clients. As a psychologist you already deal with psychiatric medicines on a daily basis, not being able to prescribe them to a client that you know desperately needs them can be quite frustrating, and time consuming making sure the client follows through with the medications and treatment. It also just makes sense Psychologist have the ability to correctly identify and diagnose mental disorders, they should be able to prescribe the drugs used for a form of treatment for these disorders.
There are many potential ethical dilemmas of online therapy. I will start with security of the session. What I mean is doctor patient confidentiality, the session can it be hacked and used for personal gain. They would also have to consider the patients they are providing therapy to. Some might include culture and religion. They would have to make special efforts to make sure that online therapy does not go against the culture of the patients. In some cultures, technology is considered to be a sin. We have to remember that not all patients understand technology and the advances at hand. Some advantages could be convenience for the patents receiving therapy. Many of us working an eight to five job leaves very little time for themselves let alone time for therapy. To me the most important is the affordability of the therapy. Another advantage could be confidentiality, you would not have to walk in to a clinic or building everything can be done right at home.
