Pluralist theorists put forth the idea that interest group involvement in policymaking contributed to democratic government

Sociology Jan 04, 2022

Pluralist theorists put forth the idea that interest group involvement in policymaking contributed to democratic government.  Can an acceptable balance can be struck between the right of people to pursue their own interests and the need to protect society from being dominated by one or more interests?  Do you believe this balance exists in our society today (and in particular, in Washington, DC)?  In class, we discussed that corporate interests dedicate significant resources to their advocacy efforts and many believe that $$$ control politics.  Do you think this is true?

A Balance between Personal Interests and that of the Public

Nationalism was the way to strike a balance between personal interests and the safety of society according to James Madison. To a great extent, this was true considering that different people and states compromised their interests for the sake of a national government that focused on the equality of all Americans. Democracy is the way for all Americans to get their voice to be heard. By electing representatives, citizens are represented during decision-making. Does this mean that one or more interests do not dominate society? That’s not the case. It is hard to strike this balance considering that every society must have different groups with different interests and such groups must push for their interests to be acknowledged and implemented. Any decision that is passed as a policy always has supporters and opposes. This means that one or more interests win in pushing their agenda while the rest must accommodate as minority losers. It is even easy to manipulate society into accepting that which is not good for them. this can occur through manipulative antidemocratic communication and miscommunication as Crain and Nadler put it.

It is not easy to say that such a balance exists in society today. The issue of manipulation and misuse of powers is quite common today. President Biden’s administration promised that it strengthen democracy and democratic institutions. However, cases of abuse of executive power, unethical conduct, as well as the politicization of functions of the government are issues that have been raised from time to time since they came into office. This is also common in other parts of the country. The New York governor is facing sexual harassment claims. Another group is pushing for a reduced gubernatorial term limit to prevent abuse of power. This is the kind of information in news today showing that New York is far from good governance that strikes a balance between personal interests and protecting society. Wag the Dog is still in play in the United States.

Corporations engage in lobbying to influence government decisions. In any political system, lobbying is inevitable. It comes in various forms including providing favored candidates with services and money. Enormous public relations campaigns employ all modern communication techniques in efforts to influence public opinion. Corporations invest heavily in research, convincing many advocates, employing the right skills in utilizing advocacy tools, and choosing effective tactics and strategies to ensure success in their advocacy efforts. It is true that $$$ control politics
