A repeal of the ACA through the courts would be a massive transfer of money from low-and moderate-income Americans to high-income Americans (Hanlon, Vinelli, and Weller, 2020). The purpose of the ACA is to provide affordable health insurance to the lower and middle class, and to protect individuals with preexisting conditions from being denied coverage. Furthermore, research shows that the loss of the law’s insurance premium tax credits and expansion of Medicaid eligibility would lead to a doubling of the number of uninsured, higher uncompensated care costs for providers, and higher taxes for low-income Americans (Ku, Steinmetz, Brantley, and Bruen, 2017). Trump administration wanted to repeal the ACA without a solid replacement plan. If the ACA were repealed, with no replacement, the number of insured Americans would drop by 19.7 million (RAND, n.d.). Repealing the ACA would not have been beneficial for Americans overall. There need to be a change that will help Americans with long term healthcare needs. Politics play a huge role in the development and implementation of health policy (Laureate Education, 2018). For a law to be changed it must go through a legislative process. According to Milstead and Short (2019), Changing the manner in which all Americans obtain health insurance is extremely complex; any changes enacted by legislators will take years to implement. The opposition to a government role in health care is based on the fact that the vast majority of our citizens do not trust their government (Dalen, Waterbrook, and Alpert, 2015). It is imperative that individuals cast votes and know who and what they are voting for because it could affect their daily lives.

Funding is a part of legislation that controls many aspects, including who gets elected and what bills are passed. Large sums of money are spent by political parties for election and re-election. Winning an election can be very expensive, costing millions of dollars (Milstead & Short, 2019). Local and federal policies can be improved or impeded depending on the legislator’s interest, rather than the benefits to the community.  Legislators who do not have a particular interest in certain issues can use their influence to place their support elsewhere. The amount of support can waiver depending on who is elected.

The role of the ACA is to provide affordable healthcare coverage for those that need it most. It protects low-income families and allows those with pre-existing conditions to receive coverage.  The ACA has addressed some of the major flaws in our existing health care system including access to care, poor health outcomes, inconsistent quality, and high health care costs (The Affordable Care Act, 2020). Over the years, there have been over 50 bills to repeal the ACA (McIntyre & Song, 2019). Some changes have been positive, whereas some changes have not been. For the everyday citizen, the possible changes to the ACA aren’t a government matter, but a personal one. For a family, it is about the possibility of having losing medical coverage that much needed medical care. On the other end of the spectrum, for a healthcare provider (nurses included), it would mean that we wouldn’t be able to serve all members of the community.
