Vietnamese Refugee

Most of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities migrated into the United States in pursuit of better economic opportunities. However, in the case of Vietnamese, they paid the greater price, as their journey to America took several years, was full of tension, desperation, trauma associated with the loss of loved ones (particularly parents and siblings), and the exposure to war-torn neighborhoods while still at a tender age. While Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders gained easier access to America, Vietnamese migrants who were escaping their country from a tender age had to first settle down in camps as refugees, within the adjacent host nations that accommodated them, before they could be sponsored to America through the missionary or church parties. America to them, was an opportunity to start something new, as the childhood trauma of witnessing their fellow peers being abducted to fight in guerilla wars, or the torment of living behind their parents and families was still lingering in their minds. Living in camps had become a norm, and as such landing in America was the only chance they had to pursue the “greater dream” against the odds of discrimination, havoc, desperation, grief, and mental torture that they faced.

The video Getting Here: Journeys from Vietnam (Link) expounded more on the trials of four particular interviewees namely Jimmy Nguyen, Dolly Brenneman, Chloe Dao, and Michael Tran as they escaped the uncertainty that defined Vietnam. Each of the individuals echoed having to live as a refugee and undergo tough times before they were finally relocated to Houston Texas; a migration journey that took between one to four years. The numerous times the interviewees tried to run away from Vietnam, as well as the deplorable conditions they were transported in showcases the desperation that defined them.
