Dr. Dingle and Class, What are your concerns or hesitations regarding this course? I don’t believe that I have any hesitations or concerns regarding this course. I think I am going to learn a lot from this course especially if I stay focused and pay attention to everything that needs to be touched upon. I think over the last couple of years of being an online student, I have learned how to properly teach myself to remain calm and not to overwork myself. I have mastered a schedule for myself between working, being a mom, and completing my assignments in a timely manner. What can you do to address such concerns or hesitations? Currently, I do not have any concerns or hesitations. What can the Professor do to address your concern or hesitations? If I were to have any concerns or hesitations I think Dr. Dingle would be able to help each of us, the best that she could. I do not see Dr. Dingle as being a person who would neglect her students out of an education. I have had Dr. Dingle has been my professor in several courses over the last 2 years and she is the absolute best. If you are unsure of a topic, she will fully explain everything you need to help you understand a specific topic. I also think that hosting Zoom meetings are a great way to improve a students connection not only to the class but to the instructor as well. I think it is extremely important for an educator to ask these questions to receive the proper feedback. -Courtney Keller No Citation needed- Personal opinion and statement Word Count: 280 ReplyReply to Comment o Collapse SubdiscussionTraci Dingle Traci Dingle TuesdaySep 14 at 4:04pm Manage Discussion Entry Hi Courtney, Thanks for your feedback. The advice that I would like to provide for my classmates is make sure you use the right citation. You do not want a classmate clicking on a link that is not relevant to the topic. You always want to make sure you are able to validate your post by citing the correct material. I hope this helps. -Courtney Keller ReplyReply to Comment • Collapse SubdiscussionGabriel Garcia Gabriel Garcia MondaySep 13 at 9:04pm Manage Discussion Entry One concern I have for this course is that I won't meet your expectations within my writing skills. Writing has never been my strong suit, but I enjoy reading and researching things, and since I have had experience using Westlaw from last semester, I think that I am well-rounded in using this research tool. But knowing the amount of writing I have to accomplish for this course and the amount of time I must dedicate to this course is nerve-racking. Still, it's not impossible, and that's why I have made it my goal to start my assignments as soon as possible and take my time with my writing assignment and using the tools Berkely has to offer, like the writing center. I have also used online applications to help me with my writing. For example, I use Grammarly to make sure my spelling is correct and if I have inserted periods and commas where they should go and not have run-on sentences. Overall I think Professor Dingle could help me with giving feedback on my assignments. I also think that last semester that I had Professor Dingle. She would connect via zoom and go over the weekly assignments, which was very helpful. Her explanation did help a lot with doing our assignment on our own and showing us the steps to take to complete our assignment accurately. But overall, I think this course will go smoothly if I put my part in learning and completing all my assignments, and if I have a question, I will make sure to ask. I believe this course will help improve your writing skills. Writing has never been my strong suit either however, college has improved my writing skills. I also enjoy reading and researching certain topics as it expands my knowledge in a specific area. I can understand why this course may be nerve-wracking to a person but try to think positive the best that you can. I am too will be using what Berkeley college has to offer in the tool department. I have made a goal within myself to get my school work done by Wednesday and then follow my reply posts toward the end of the week. I think you will do great! Moving one paragraph at a time may ease some of your hesitations with your writing. Increasing your knowledge on the subject matter of the writing can assist also. It seems like research can possibility never end. There also seems like there is no right or wrong answer to many legal questions. I am worried that there will be many cases supporting my view, and then many other cases supporting the opposing view. Additionally, I am also concerned that I may cite a case, only to find out that the case was overturned by a latter case. I'm am hopefully that this class will address my concerns. I will assume that I am not the only and/or first person to be concerned about the above issues. Therefore, I believe the course will put me at ease and address my issues. I can do my part by participating in the class, completing assignments, and practice. I believe that the course materials, and readings will address my issues. But I am happy to see that this course offers Zoom sessions. It is good to know that if I need clarification on an issue, I can ask during the meeting. But the research sites have option to narrow down your search and options. But overall I agree with your thinking about there being to much information. Personally, I was a little bit nervous about taking this class, as I have not had to do legal research in quite some time. As I mentioned, I got my AAS and Paralegal Certificate from Berkeley in 04, and while I am back now continuing with studies and pursuing my BA, most of my core research classes were taken already my first time around. Even though I worked as a real estate paralegal since, I have no had to access Westlaw or Nexis Uni ever since, so I have to say I am a little hesitant for that. Also, I have been taking the 7 week accelerated classes, so I was not quite sure of what to expect going back to a 15 week class, and was a little nervous that it might not hold my attention quite as much since I was used to such a fast-paced curriculum more recently. What can you do to address such concerns or hesitations? To be honest, last weeks discussion board already eased some of my worries. I found out that it is very easy to now access these two legal research sites, and some of my classmates even gave more tips, for ways to further obtain case information and additional ways to search for legal research. With regards to going back to a 15 week course, I am addressing it by appreciating the extra time. I am anticipating a lot of work required for this course and it will be nice to not have it all jammed together and to be able to take my time with my work and the learning of new things. What can the Professor do to address your concern or hesitations? I know that we just met, and haven't been together for a long time with this only being the start of week #2, but you have already been so helpful. It is appreciated that you give the time in the zooms to make sure that we don't have any individual concerns, and the fact that you gave out your cell and encourage us to reach out if we need you makes me feel extra comfortable to come to you for help or any questions if the need arises- so thank you for that! -Kristen WC: 393 ReplyReply to Comment o Collapse SubdiscussionOsheba Parillon Osheba Parillon ThursdaySep 16 at 11:20am Manage Discussion Entry Hi Kristen, I definitely understand where you're coming from. Like you I got my AAS in legal studies but in 2017, and took a bit of a break afterwards until now to complete my BS in Legal Studies. Im expected to graduate Spring of 2022, which is where the pressure of doing great in this course comes in. I believe our professor has made the course very manageable, especially for an online courses I feel as tho I am in the classroom getting the full experience. I feel the powerpoints are definitely essential as well as the e-text in gathering any information you may need, if you ever feel that pressure of doing great ever presents itself. All in all I hope we both do great this semester and I look forward to seeing you obtain you BS very very soon ! If you don't mind me asking how has the life of a paralegal been treating you ? Congrats on your decision to come back!! We got this! I agree, Professor has eased a lot of my worries just by the open communication lines that she has provided, and as you pointed out the supplementing information, PowerPoint, e-text, etc. has all been very informative and easy to comprehend. I do feel a lot of pressure to do well, this time around I have my children watching me and I am trying to set the best example that I can. As far as me working as a paralegal, I got very lucky. I started working for my boss in 02, actually before I got my AAS & Paralegal certificate in 04. The office was the whole reason that I even went to school. My boss and his family became like a second family to me, and maybe its because I started so young and had no outside experience he was able to give me lots of training and taught me how to work to his standards, and after the years I was able to work very independently in the office. Of course he overlooked my work, but I had a lot of independence and he was confident of my work. It's funny now, because his oldest daughter who was about 12 when I first met her, just passed the bar this past year and is now working in the office -and I guess kind of my boss now too :) It really is a great career. I have now branched out and in addition I also work in healthcare (evenings- for now), which is what I have decided to focus more on, because just personally I feel there is more room for me to grow there. I am hoping to work for the legal department within the healthcare organization, and possibly take on a management position. I didn't think at this point in my life I could handle law school, but I guess there is always the saying....never say never.. Looking forward to working together this semester and best of luck to you! -Kristen ReplyReply to Comment ? Professor I would just like to express how grateful I am that you took the time to create such detailed power points, which helps me when it comes to quizzing and creating my flashcards to study. You've made this course so user-friendly and very organized and detailed oriented in finding exactly what you need. If I would have to pick a concern it would be making the Zoom calls live. This is because I am a full-time worker and student, As much as I would love to be present at all times in the course it may be difficult because of the commuting from work to school to get online. I would hop on from my office, but its not the best environment to have an online class session. I do hope this doesn't affect my grade at any point because I do love this course and hope to exceed in it, since it is apart of my degree in legal studies. I hope we can possibly find a solution to this, or I could stream the videos at a later time as you mentioned in our first Zoom class. I look forward to hearing from you! I have no hesitations for the course but my concern is being able to actually learn how to conduct an actual research on cases to prepare me to be confident on taking a paralegal position as I see that is a major requirement of being a paralegal. I also hope to learn how to properly speak on the facts of a case as I am conducting my research. What can you do to address such concerns or hesitations? To address such concerns I believe the best way for me to gain the knowledge that I want I am going to have to put in full effort into reading the textbook along with additional information from the professor. Each lesson throughout the course itself will be helpful as well as taking advantage of asking questions to my professor and classmates. I can also take the time to practice researching random cases and gather as much information as possible. I am eager to learn how to properly do research for cases. What can the Professor do to address your concern or hesitations? I believe being that the semester has just began, the professor has done good with providing information that can assist with my concern. Each lesson I believe will help me achieve my goal of confidentiality researching legal documentation and being able to properly word the facts of cases that are being researched. Feedback from each submitted assignment is great help from the professor as well.
