1)What do you need to be, do, or have to have a good quality of life? What are barriers to your life quality? What supports your life quality?

To have a good quality of life, personally, I would like to make the right decisions and establish the priorities that I want to have in order to achieve my goals. Exercising is one of the things that I consider to improve my body, keep me active and healthy.  Also having access to education is one of the things that improves my quality of life since it teaches me to think and helps me to progress and to be a much more educated person. Studying gives me the ability to think and to apply my knowledge in my daily life.
One of the barriers could be, we often postpone our responsibilities because we are lazy to do them. That contributes to discourage us and stop doing the things that are really important. My quality of life is benefited when I have access to live in a decent place, have friends, access to study, have dreams, desire to grow and progress, etc.

2) In the lecture, we discussed ableism. Give one example of how ableism impacted Joaquin's life or the life of any of the students who shared during the lecture.

One of my colleagues said that one of his relatives has down syndrome and explained that people treated him as if he were not a person with feelings and that he did not understand anything that was happening.  The whole class was against ableism, ableism is a type of discrimination that marginalizes those who suffer it. If the person with a disability already feels marginalized, the ableism makes everything worse.   In class we discussed that many times, even people who are part of the health personnel can have discriminatory treatment with people who suffer from a disability, they treat them as if they did not have any feelings or sensations. Not only joaquin but anyone who suffers from ableism may feel unprotected in the world.

3)  Explain presuming competence as it relates to Joaquin's story. How does the life quality of people relate to the presumption of competence?

When Joaquín felt supported by his family, began to hit the table, implying that he could understand everything they said. And from there he began to find alternative ways of communicating with people. Joaquin wanted to be treated in a normal way, that could be a break in his life and he could feel more accompanied and understood by his family. If the person with a disability understands that you are treating them in a normal way, as if the disability did not exist, they can feel a great change in their life, they can feel more accompanied, supported, valued and even more understood. The person with a disability who is treated in a special way, as if he were a sick person, may tend to develop depression and feel alone and marginalized in the world.

4) One of our students mentioned that "a barrier to life quality is when we assume that we've already done the work." Please elaborate on what the student was referring to. Can you think of other examples where this holds true?

In my opinion, what my partner meant is that many times, we get stuck and settle where we are and that can result in life becoming monotonous, and motivate us to stay in our comfort zone. This can be evidenced, for example, in a person who is married with children and is completely unhappy in his marriage. The person may feel that he has already done his job, that he has already met the standards that society teaches him that he must carry out (Having a wife, kids..). The result is that the person is trapped in a life that he does not like, just for making the others happy.  Another example could be a boy who finishes his college degree and feels that he is there, that he no longer has anything to learn, that he knows everything. This can be a mistake since we must always keep working in our goals. Believing that we have already done everything and we have nothing left to do, is a big problem, since it can lead us to make bad decisions and can even make us hit many times in our life.
