Mindful Observation- Meditation

            I have been following my yoga coach and attending his lectures for almost a month. I find him always vibrant and bubbly, which I think is very important in life. For this reason, I have decided to emulate his practice of daily meditation as a means of coping with and overcoming stress from my studies. The practice involves sitting still and taking deep breaths following a regular interval. To help with concentration, my coach advises one to meditate in a quiet place. Additionally, I stare at a flower, which is supposed to boost my concentration levels. Lastly, I listen to flute music and the sound of lashing rivers to escape into my world.

Reason for Choosing the Practice

            Lately, I have been feeling quite depressed due to my academic and work life. I have to balance between my studies and a part-time job, both of which can be demanding at times. As such, I sought a means of escaping from my hectic routine. After careful research, I found out that meditation can help one improve their mental stability. Meditation allows one to become a new self by simply analyzing their thoughts and feelings. On the other hand, mindfulness allows one to appreciate their present environment and circumstances. With this practice, I am aiming at feeling more positive about my job and studies.

Description of Practice

            At first, it was hard to concentrate and my mind would wander away into endless thoughts. Honestly, I did not think meditation to be a difficult thing. I expected that I would start off just like the meditation experts on You Tube. I was disappointed with myself and I tried not to think while meditating. However, I learned that it is normal to wander off and that I should not resist. With time, my meditation became better and I was able to control my mind with more practice.

Benefits of Meditation

            Indeed, the practice has had a tremendous positive impact on my life. I feel more positive about my work and my studies, and my activity rate has increased. I have been actively involved in my classes all through the week. Surprisingly, I can concentrate during my lessons and I have been answering questions. The same applies to my part-time job where I have been more active. In fact, one of my colleagues stated that I have been very cheerful of late.

What I Will Do Different

            In my future mediation, I will not exert unnecessary pressure on myself. That is, I will be more open to my mind wandering off. Instead, I will try to bring my mind back every time I drift into other thoughts. It is important to remember that meditation, just like physical exercise, is a skill that takes time to perfect.

Teaching Others

            Based on my experience, I think it is important that others learn to meditate. I am looking to gradually introduce my friends to meditation. I will emphasize the importance of a conducive meditation environment. Additionally, I will stress the importance of patience in meditation.

Application as a Nurse

            I am looking forward to applying the benefits of meditation in my school and clinical practice. I will teach mindfulness techniques to other students and request the school to provide the necessary resources. Further, I will encourage both nurses and patients to try meditation for its psychological benefits. Besides, I will carry on with a positive attitude, which I think will improve my performance in school and clinical practice.
