Week 7 Assignment

Stephine Wims

Walden University

There are different factors that influence individuals for career development.  The marginalized group that I chose is adolescents from low-income backgrounds.  This group of people faces many different challenges that are related to career development such as family influences, education and access to resources.  I will further discuss the challenges that low-income adolescents face and how as a school counselor I can advocate and provide resources to them.

Advocate Statement

Whether it is this group of people or another group as a future counselor, I have an obligation to advocate for all of my clients no matter the gender, race or social class.  I want to be able to provide an environment that is trustworthy to my clients; I will achieve this by educating myself on different bias and stereotypes.  I must also be educated on the issues that impact my clients.  I dedicate myself to ensuring that as a counselor I am the voice that advocates for my clients.  I am the person who will empower and plant seeds of change for them.

Sensitive Career Counseling

I want to work with low-income adolescents.   I chose this group because when I worked as a case manager for Family and Children Services, I found that this group of individuals to be fragile and I recognized that some of the challenges they faced seemed to go unnoticed.  Carter (2003) states that “there is one book per 300 children” this means that there is a limited access to education in certain communities.  As the advocate for this group of people I need to be aware of the different resources and make them accessible to increase education.  Poverty is another challenge for low-income adolescents.  Their parents work so much and cannot afford to dedicate their time to the needs of their children because they work so much.  Attendance tends to be low in this group also.

Strategies

As a counselor, one strategy that I could use is going into the community to collaborate with different businesses.  I would collaborate to see if on the job training could be provided to this group.  I would also set up a career building opportunity for students to attend and become familiar with these businesses.  Collaborations within the community would promote change within the community.

Conclusion

Being a culturally competent counselor is important. It is imperative to understand the needs of people within a community in order to provide proper resources to these communities.  Obtaining the right education and being open to change is important for ensuring that the needs of everyone is met.  The goal of any counselor is to make a difference.
