Final Exam History of Women in Western Civilization

Please answer all questions in full sentences, using graduate-level grammar and sentence structure.  Errors will be taken into account when calculating your grade for the exam.

1. 25 Points (2-3 paragraphs, minimum 5-6 sentences each paragraph) – from the mid-term:  Discuss the role of education – or the lack thereof – in the development of women’s place in Western Civilization.  Provide specific examples from multiple readings. 
2. 25 Points (3-4 paragraphs, minimum 5-6 sentences each paragraph): Combining two questions from your midterm, discuss the roles that science and medicine have played in subjugating women and defining their place in western civilization.
3. 25 Points (2-3 paragraphs, minimum 5-6 sentences each paragraph):  Using your readings from “More Work for Mother,” provide an example to illustrate how “labor saving devices” in the home actually created more work for women.  Then, explain how “labor saving devices” in the home lessened work for men, thus allowing them to leave the home to find paid work, which became necessary to buy the labor saving devices to allow men to leave the home.
4. 25 Points (2-3 paragraphs, minimum 5-6 sentences each paragraph): Based on the readings from “Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” what does Wollstonecraft assert puts women in a position of “degradation.”  Feel free to pull in thoughts from earlier readings.
