Response One

Pride

Pop culture and social justice. An interesting dynamic that has seen corporations and social media adapt to maximize profit during times of unrest, tragedy and change.  Currently, we are in the middle of pride month, a month to celebrate the LGBTQ community and their struggle for equality. You see all of the corporations change their logos to the pride flag for the month and “celebrate diversity” at the same time that same corporation has their regular logo in countries like Russia and China; they only want to celebrate diversity where it maximizes their profits, they do not stand behind the community they are “celebrating” unless it filters into their pockets.  It is understandable that a corporation like Disney will celebrate pride, create cash grab merchandise and events where it is legal but ignore the injustice in other countries like China; they are afraid to lose the access they currently have in that country and don’t want to lose potential money. The fact that China does not heed the rest of the world’s general copyright laws is a different story and frankly enough books are written on the matter. Disney has an entire store dedicate to pride month, with the rainbow flag plastered over everything the mouse has its tentacles into. Ng (2019) points out that these corporations manipulate the symbol and meaning of pride in order to sell a heteronormative narrative without acknowledging the people they are celebrating while often promoting illusion.

True Justice

Tragedy has stuck our world many times and, in those instances, it is nice to see people “come together” but never accomplish anything. The transparent French flag profiles on Facebook or the rainbow-colored profile picture on Facebook to ensure that other people know your solidarity is the epitome of a dystopian nightmare where people feel their thoughts and prayers do anything substantial; donate, march, volunteer, lobby etc. The late John Lewis understood the importance pop culture has played in the social justice movements and attempted to reach the youth in a unique way: he created a graphic novel. Hoeness-Krupsaw (2018) discusses how this not only empowers the message of the Civil Rights movement but the superhero elements are grounded into real American history allowing it to resonate strongly with the reader.

Ethical Responsibility

In my opinion, while it is important to promote positivity, it is not the responsibility of people with a large pop culture following to set the moral and ethical agenda for a group of people or a nation. It is also disingenuous to be consistently positive and not promote, share, or discuss topics and situations that may be controversial. However, it is understandable that a person with a large following won’t do that as they are enjoying the top of the mountain and anything they say that could cause controversy will cause them to be torn down.

Response Two

· What has been pop culture’s role in promoting social justice?  Give specific examples.

It appears that pop culture and social justice can easily go hand and hand with each other. Pop culture can bring awareness to multiple different issues. With the age of social media and technology, we look to the internet for news and social issues. Recently in 2020 BLM seems to have taken over social media to speak about the injustices against Black Americans.

· Share one unique example (that has not been mentioned in the unit or by classmates) or how pop culture has promoted social justice, awareness of an issue, or has had a role in influencing public opinion to promote equality, justice, acceptance, or tolerance.

When it comes to pop culture multiple celebrities have taken to the internet with the hope to influence the masses. Recently basket player LeBron James has taken to social media to voice his opinion about police brutality, education, and gun violence. A few years back football player named Colin Kaepernick refused and other athletes refused to stand for the national anthem until they saw a change for Black Americans. Both athletes and other celebrities who spoke on these issues encouraged others to follow with the hope of change, acceptance, justice, and the ability to promote equality.

· In your opinion, do people with a large pop culture following have an ethical responsibility to promote positive messages in their work?

I feel people with a large pop culture following should promote positive messages in their work. It’s because they are setting an example for the youth. Most children have social media accounts, they look up to these celebrities and influencers. Trusted allies to Hollywood’s creators— working to shape humanizing, sympathetic empowering portrayals of social issues that span from immigration to racial justice (Frank & Falzone, 2021). I also feel since they have a large following, they should get the word out to others, so that other individuals can make their community and hopefully the world a better place.
