Introduction to Linux (Required/Graded)

The Linux operating system is widely used in industry, especially for servers. Why do you believe this is the case?

If you've worked with Linux previously, share your experiences. How would you compare it with other operating systems—like Windows?

If you have little or no experience with it, what are your perceptions?

In addition to your primary forum response, post at least two follow-up responses to your classmates.

I believe most industries using Linux mainly have to do with security closely followed by the fact that it’s the best OS to use when considering the budget. I couldn’t foresee companies using a cheap OS if it wasn’t a secure one. As soon as an exploit is discovered, it is immediately patched into the latest stable kernel.

The only experience I have ever had with Linux was to create a server in the Navy to enable allies to be able to see each other during a variety of simulated mission exercises. This is known as Blue Force Tracking. This was my first experience for myself and most of the people I worked with.

From my extremely limited experience, I would say that Linux appears to be very user-friendly. It seemed as though if that was the OS I was to learn on, I would have been able to know the ins and outs of Linux faster than Windows. I’m sure there is going to be a major learning curve seeing that the commands are case sensitive and memorizing commands will be difficult because although they are similar to some windows commands, they are different enough to still throw me off.
