A hospital must decide whether to accept information technology (IT) incentive payments now from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to install an electronic health record system (EMR) or wait to install them in the next few years which they are mandated to do.

The incentive payments will not cover the total costs but will certainly help. What factors do they need to consider when making their decision to install the EMR now or wait? What would you recommend they do?
