Your essay will be evaluated in terms of knowledge of the material, clarity and organization of ideas, and analysis. 1. Write an essay analyzing the administrations of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Argentina. More specifically, examine the following questions: What accounts for their electoral victory? In the case of Cristina, include her election and re-election. What are their achievements/failures/challenges? How would you characterize democracy under the Kirchners? (Note: You must read Levitsky and Murillo’s article on “Argentina: from Kirchner to Kirchner” and Calvo and Murillo’s article on “Argentina: The Persistence of Peronism.”)  Please cite a few quotes from the articles.

2. Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian writer, argued that Mexico, under the rule of the PRI, had a “perfect dictatorship” from 1930’s until late 1990’s.Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Please take into consideration the following factors: political party system, electoral process, presidency, organization of social groups (such as unions), military, corruption, media, respect for human rights and tolerance for opposition, and social and economic policies.
