Germany invaded Poland in September 1939 but did not attack French and English forces in France until spring 1940.

After Germany invaded Poland, England and France officially declared war in September 1939. There was no real fighting between these countries until Germany invaded first the Netherlands and Belgium and then France in May 1940. This nine month lapse of time without real fighting is referred to as the "phony war".
