1. In 2009 the number of vehicle sales in the United States was 10,602 thousand and in 2013 it was

15,884 thousand.

a. Determine the average rate of change (slope) from 2009 to 2013.

b. If x is the number of years since 2009 and f (x) is the number of vehicles sold, find the equation of the line through these two points.

c. Assuming f(x) is a linear function, use the equation to predict the number of vehicles sold in 2016.

2. A cyclist traveled 12 kilometers per hour faster than an in-line skater. In the time it took the cyclist to travel 75 kilometers, the skater had gone 45 kilometers. Find the speed of the skater.

3. The bookstore at SunTan U had a sale on school t-shirts. Thursday they sold 45 of the marked down t-shirts for a total of $406.50. If the women’s shirts were on sale for $9.25 and the men’s shirts were on sale for $8.50, how many of each was sold on Thursday?

a. Write a system of equations that represents this information.

b. Solve the system to find the number women’s shirts and the number of men’s shirts that were sold on Thursday.
