Doublespeak, or corporate speak is language used to deliberately mislead, hide, or evade the truth. This distortion of the truth is often found in military, political, and corporate language. A loss of credibility and respect results when a politician talks of “revenue enhancements” rather than “tax increases,” a police officer refers to “nontraditional organized crime” rather than gang activity, or a military spokesperson speaks of “collateral damage” or “friendly fire” rather than civilians killed accidentally by the military’s own weapons.
