  1. Identify and describe the functions of selected regions of the brain

LAB Activity – Making a “Brain Hat”

This lab activity will reinforce your learning of the location and function of specified brain structures and regions.

While this lab may seem a bit young for a college lab, it is the only way I have arrived at low-cost way to be able to “model” the brain in the online lab.  I do believe that having to actually identify and color specific structures on a 3-D model, will help you solidify what is learned from two-dimensional pictures.  If you have any suggestions for this lab I would be eager to hear them!

As you move through this project keep in mind the Nervous System I Lab information – sensory information arrives at the CNS (“sensory input”) and the CNS must “determine” how to respond (“motor output”).  Consider where certain sensory information (vision, touch, heart rate, blood pressure, taste, body temperature, etc.) would need to go in the brain for processing and integration.  Then consider where the actual motor output (for moving, or changing heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) has to be generated / created within the brain.  Not all of this may take in the cerebrum!  ... Hmmmm.

Time needed: ~ 30 minutes to assemble the hat; 1 – 2.5 hours to color, label photograph the hat.

Materials you will need

Brain Cap pdf in Content

Scissors

White glue stick

Clear tape

Black Marker

Color pencils

Camera

Paperclips or clothes pins

To Make the “Cap” (21pts)

  1. Photographs MUST be clear and well-lit.  If I cannot see the label and outline I will not be able to award you the points
  2. Download and print off the brain cap (slightly heavier paper may be easier to work with – if you can photocopy the patterns onto heavier paper)..
  3. Cut out the pattern pieces.  Determine what parts represent the cerebral hemispheres
  4. AFTER coloring and labeling per the instructions below, tape or glue (paper clips or clothes pin may help hold pieces together during this process)
    1. Match “A” to “A” and “B” to “B”
    2. Follow any additional instructions on the pattern
      1. To bring curves into the cerebral areas cut along the dotted lines draw the cut edges together and tape them.
  5. Add the cervical vertebral column, taping it together
  6. ON THE RIGHT HEMISPHERE:
    1. Color the frontal lobe green (1 pt)
    2. Color the parietal lobe blue (1 pt)
    3. Color the temporal lobe red (1 pt)
    4. Color the occipital lobe orange (1 pt)

Take a picture or two that clearly shows 6a – dSave the picture(s) as Brain Hat Q6 in a Word doc called NS II Brain Hat

  1. Color the cerebellum brown (1 pt)
  2. Outline pons area on the brainstem and color it yellow (1 pt)
  3. Outline the medulla oblongata area on the brainstem and color it green (1 pt)

Take a picture or two that clearly shows 7-9.  Save the picture(s) as Brain Hat Q7_9 in the Word doc

  1. With your black marker draw in and label (4 pts)
    1. Longitudinal fissure
    2. Central sulcus
    3. Lateral sulcus
    4. Parieto-occipital sulcus

Take a picture or two that clearly shows 10a-d.  Save the picture(s) as Brain Hat Q10 in the Word doc

  1. With the black marker label the following ON THE LEFT, UNCOLORED HEMISPHERE (5 pts)
    1. Precentral gyrus
    2. Postcentral gyrus
    3. Premotor cortex
    4. Primary motor cortex
    5. Primary auditory cortex

Take a picture or two that clearly shows 10a-e.  Save the picture(s) as Brain Hat Q11 in the Word doc

  1. Cut out the “functions” on the last page of the pdf.  Tape them to the appropriate part of the brain. (5 pts)
    1. DO NOT DO NOT LABEL “EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS”

Take a picture or two that clearly shows 12.  Save the picture(s) as Brain Hat Q12 in the Word doc

  1.   Save the Word Doc as a PDF file and upload it into the NS Part II Assignment box.  I will NOT grade it unless it is in PDF form.
