Overfishing has been shown to be one of the most destructive things that we do to the oceans
Overfishing has been shown to be one of the most destructive things that we do to the oceans. While the actual removal of fish in unsustainable numbers can greatly harm marine communities, it is often compounded by the habitat destruction associated with fishing techniques. For this discussion forum, I want you to investigate some of the most common ways that we catch fish commercialy. Do some background research to learn as much as you can about each of the following commercial fishing techniques and their current regulations:
- Bottom trawling
- Longlines
- Gillnets,
- Purse seine nets
Directions:
1. Choose ONE of the above methods. Describe it in detail and offer your opinion on whether or not there should be any additional regulations put on the method of fishing you choose to discuss (in at least 200 words). If so, what should realistically be done?
Be sure to incorporate background information you found online into your proposal and consider some of the complicating issues such as:
- What could be done in place of these methods to catch fish?
- Who would enforce any regulations you think should be put into place?
- How can they be paid?
- What can be done in international waters where we do not technically have the jurisdiction to regulate fishing practices?
- Will there be any political ramifications if jobs are cut or catch values are significantly reduced?
- Are there any other potential issues that may arise from increased regulation?
2. Then, after reading posts from your classmates, choose two that interest you and respectfully explain why you support or disagree with their position (at least 100 words for each response). Each of your two responses must add additional info from your research.
3. As always you must cite the sources of any specific facts/data that is not common knowledge. However, DO NOT include any quoted passages. Your post should be entirely your own words, thoughts, ideas, and feelings about this topic.

I chose to talk about Bottom trawling because I think it is the worst way to fish because it causes the most harm to both marine species and their environments. The way Bottom trawling works is that there is a large net that tapers down towards the end and attached are heavy "doors" that help keep the net open while dragging across the ocean floor [1]. The effect of this lazy way of fishing is that it catches everything in the net as the net is being dragged on the floor. This can include any marine life that forage on the ocean floor like turtles and even captures corrals, destroying anything in its way. Not only does this method cause over fishing of unintended fishes it also destroys the habitats of many marine life which rely on them for spawning, nutrients and protection [2]. I think bottom trawling should outright be banned worldwide and some countries have already banned it because of its negative effects. Those countries include the US (all of the west coast and from North Carolina to Florida), Indonesia, Canary Islands, Mediterranean, and New Zealand [3]. I think an alternative to Bottom trawling would be farm fishing because you can hold farms to a higher standard and can regulate them better than companies using boats to fish in the ocean. Yes there are negatives to farm fishing but I think with research and development we can come up safe fish farming practices. You can farm fish using pens in the ocean, ponds and recirculating tanks. As far as jobs go, the same companies that fish out in open waters can slowly start fish farms and train their employees on certain practices. It’s better to be ready and not needed than be needed and not ready. I know that sounds weird but it’s true, fish farms are going to be the future of fishing and the sooner we start to implement it with safety regulations, the easier the transition will be.
