CJ101: INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE

M8A1: What Lies Ahead For Juvenile Justice?

Although violent juvenile crime has decreased, younger juveniles account for a substantial proportion of juvenile arrests and juvenile court caseload. Female delinquency has grown substantially, the number of juveniles held in public facilities has increased sharply, minority juveniles are greatly overrepresented in the custody population, and overcrowding is a serious problem in juvenile facilities. Many private and government agencies are attempting to address these seemingly intractable issues with innovative and effective grassroots and community-based programs.

Before creating your wiki:

First, view some of the programs for assisting juveniles and improving juvenile justice:

What is a Wiki?

A wiki is a shared online document or workspace for multiple contributors. It has the advantage of permitting all uses to work collaboratively on a project without the hassle of emailing or sharing numerous documents. With a wiki, there is only one "live" group product. Any member can add, edit, or delete content - even if it was created by someone else. The following video is a good illustration of how this works:

Getting Started with Your Wiki

You will be using Canvas Collaborations for your Wiki.  Canvas Collaborations provides a way for you and your peers to work together on a Google document (what Canvas refers to as a collaboration). You must have a Google account to use the Collaborations tool.  The following document will walk you through how to set up a Google account (if you don't have one) and how to register your Google account with Canvas, along with other pertinent information.

After reading the assignments, selected articles and lectures, and viewing the video segment, you are now prepared to discuss the many issues and organizations, including state and federal government initiatives, created to address juvenile justice problems. For this assignment, address the following topic:

  • Choose a specific juvenile justice reform program, initiative, and or policy and create a wiki to explain it. Then add to two of your colleague’s wikis. Make sure you check back in and see what has been added to your wiki and note whether you agree or disagree with the addition and why.

Keep the following in mind when making your posts to the discussion area:

  1. Did you complete all of the elements required in your initial discussion post?
  2. Did you respond to the initial posts of at least two of your fellow students?
  3. Did you acknowledge those who responded to you, including questions from your instructor?
  4. Were all of your posts made on time? That is, was your initial post made before Midnight Eastern Time on Thursday, and were your follow-up posts made before Midnight Eastern Time on Sunday.

Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors.

This is a “post first” discussion forum, which means you must submit your initial post before you can view other students’ posts.
