1. Write two short paragraphs sketching out, first, your counter-thesis, and, second, your thesis. So say you are arguing the point about subverting traditional gender roles. The first paragraph would be about the novel and traditional roles then the second paragraph (your thesis) the subversion idea. Once you deal with the counter-thesis in the opening of the essay, the rest of the paper will be about establishing with nuance the thesis itself.

2. Type out six key quotations that you would use to back up your thesis, numbered 1-6, with three getting at generally main points and three getting at more subtle points. Annotate each one with a preview of how you might use it in your essay to establish your thesis and provide nuance to your argument.
