PBH321: INTRODUCTION TO EPIDEMIOLOGY

M7A2: Solve the outbreak!

By the end of this activity, you will be able to apply infectious disease epidemiology terms, and understand methodologies used in outbreak investigations.

Before beginning this activity, read the module notes and chapter 8 of your text. Viewing the optional activity will also help in completing this activity. This activity will require that you participate in 2 outbreak investigations using CDC’s “Solve the Outbreak” desktop application. The activities will walk you through real-life inspired outbreak investigations that will aid in your understanding of the methodologies needed to investigate an infectious disease outbreak.

  • After reading your module notes, and the chapter in your text, go to the CDC’s Solve the Outbreak (Links to an external site.) (accessible version available on the site).
  • Navigate to Level 1. There you will be instructed to “Select a Mission to Solve an Outbreak.”
  • For this activity, you will select the missions named in the document linked below (“Case of the Conference Blues” followed by “Deadlier than War”). Depending on your computer screen, you may need to scroll or click and drag to the right to see these cases.
  • Answer the questions in the “Solve An Outbreak Activity Questions” sheet either as you progress through each activity, or at the end. You can return to the cases and replay them at any time.
