El 19 de febrero, 2021 Beg. SPAN 1001 Cultural Project One –PART ONE

Cultural Project One is due on Friday, Feb. 19, 2021.  In compliance with the Master Course Outline, we focus on MnTC goals 6a, 6b and 6c arts and humanities and MnTC goals 8a and 8b global perspectives.  The project contains research, comparison and reaction

• Choose two Spanish speaking countries from this list below.   (See maps in V text pages 436-439)

México, España

América Central: Belice, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá

El Caribe:  Cuba, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico

América del Sur: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile

• Research the culture and cultural traditions of the chosen countries.  Topics such as style of dress, music, foods, family life, celebrations and holidays are usually easier to find.  Choose 3 of these topics from each country and write a comparison of the similarities and differences of these 3 traditions and/or customs between the two countries.  (You might also look for cultural symbols such as eggs and crosses for Easter and nativities and bells for Christmas). 

• Write about 2 cultural comparisons between one or both countries and the culture in which you were raised. 

• Identify and explain 2 global contributions from the researched cultures by examining the role and importance of various cultural patterns and how they affect the social practices and behavior of societies. 

• Identify and explain 2 common beliefs and/or attitudes within the cultures studied (these could be gestures and social interactions) that reflect specific historical time periods. 

• Cite your resources for your project.  The RCC online library can be helpful for research sites including newspapers from target countries and Culture Grams.  No plagiarism.

• Write a reaction to your own researched information specifying what you have learned and what you think about this new information and include this in your 1 to 2 page WORD document written in English and emailed to by 2/19/21. 

• Beg. SPAN 1001 Cultural Project One – Part Two (due Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021)

1.  Contact a friend, colleague or family member college age or older and ask them to read and react to your cultural project.  Their written reaction is not whether they enjoyed reading your paper but rather an explanation of what they learned from you when they read the project.  Part Two should contain their reactions about comparisons of similarities and differences and observances of cultural customs and/or traditions.

2. This WORD document (approximately ½ to ¾ pages long) should be written in English and emailed to by Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021.
